In life, and especially in fiction. </p><p>In historical fiction, we see these stakes crop up all the time. As one does. Not only is workshop feedback massively helpful, but it also showed me where my students had knowledge gaps. Where they instinctually knew something was off, but they couldn&#8217;t quite put it into words. </p><p>Understanding the stakes, and why they matter even more than plot, was almost like a black hole in their vocabulary. It was something they simply couldn&#8217;t articulate. We were very much influenced by the narrative vlogs of the time (the series ran from 2015-2017) like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Carmilla, so naturally much of our time was spent in the character Alison&#8217;s dorm room.</p><p>Prior to being a filmmaker myself, I didn&#8217;t really spend a lot of time viewing media consciously considering the spaces characters inhabited. But you probably have a sense of what it is because you read books and you watch films (like Pride and Prejudice, our guide for this video!). Not to mention, you&#8217;ve seen your best friend finally dump Chad after taking him back 7 times, omg. That was a RIDE. But look at our girl and how she&#8217;s grown!<br><br>And that is the whole point of a character arc. There are three main categories of arcs, and a whole host of sub categories to choose from.
